The Devil

AttachmentHabitsAwareness

The Devil shows attachments, habits or patterns that keep you stuck. It isn’t evil; it’s an honest look at what has a hold on you, and the chains are often looser than they seem.

The Devil is card fifteen: the habits, cravings and fears that hold on to us, and feel much stronger than they really are. Upright, it’s about attachments that hold you back. Look at the Devil, crouched on a pedestal above a man and a woman in chains.

They wear small horns and tails. But look closely: their chains are loose enough to lift off. The card isn’t a judgement; it’s a mirror, asking where you’ve given your power away.

Turn the card around, and the Devil points to release. You may be seeing a pattern for what it is, breaking a habit, or stepping away from something that controlled you. It can be uncomfortable, with relapses along the way.

Keep going, and ask for support. Sometimes it warns that a hidden dependency is about to surface, so be honest with yourself. In love, the Devil can mean intense attraction and passion, but also jealousy, possessiveness, or staying out of fear rather than choice.

Ask whether the bond feels freely chosen. At work, it can mean feeling trapped in a job for the money, or a toxic workplace. With money, watch for debt or deals that tie you in.

Look at what you can change, even slowly. And as a yes or no? No: this could tie you to something that isn’t good for you.

Look at what’s really driving the question first.

Upright

The Devil crouches on a pedestal above two chained figures, a man and a woman with small horns and tails. Look closely and their chains are loose enough to lift off. Upright, the card is about attachments that hold you back: habits, cravings, unhealthy relationships, money worries, or beliefs about what you can’t do. It isn’t a judgement. It’s a mirror, asking where you’ve given your power away, and reminding you that the chains are looser than they feel.

Reversed

Reversed, the Devil points to release. You may be recognising a pattern for what it is, breaking a habit, or stepping away from something that controlled you. It can be an uncomfortable process, with relapses along the way. Keep going and ask for support. In some readings it warns that a hidden dependency is about to surface, so be honest with yourself about what that might be.

Love

In love, the Devil can mean intense attraction and passion, but also jealousy, possessiveness or staying in a relationship out of fear rather than choice. Ask whether the bond feels freely chosen. Reversed, you may be breaking free of an unhealthy dynamic, or finally seeing it clearly.

Career and money

At work, the Devil can point to feeling trapped in a job for the money, workaholism, or a toxic workplace. It can also warn about debt or deals that tie you in. Look at what you can change, even slowly. Reversed, you’re starting to reclaim your time and choices.
