Four Suits, One Situation

Time to put the module together. You’ll see one situation through all four suits, describe a card in your own words, then read one for a real question, with Quinn giving feedback along the way.

What this module taught you

  1. The Minor Arcana and Its Four SuitsThe 56 Minor Arcana describe everyday life in four suits. Find the emblem first: it names the suit and the area of life.Revisit →
  2. Wands and Cups: Fire and WaterWands are Fire: energy and drive. Cups are Water: feelings and relationships.Revisit →
  3. Swords and Pentacles: Air and EarthSwords are Air: thoughts and words, read with care. Pentacles are Earth: work and resources, never a money forecast.Revisit →
The method you’ll use now
  1. 1Spotfind the emblem and name the suit.
  2. 2Lookdescribe what’s happening in the scene.
  3. 3Askput the suit’s question to the situation, about drive, feeling, thought or practical life.
  4. 4Interpretsuggest meanings that point back to details, without forecasts.

Here’s one situation seen through each suit. You’ve been offered a new role at work. Wands asks: does it excite me, and give me room to grow? Cups asks: how do I feel about the change, and who would I miss? Swords asks: what do I honestly think, and what needs saying? Pentacles asks: what are the practical terms, such as time, pay and skills?

None of these is wrong. Each suit lights up a part of the situation the others miss. In a reading, the suit that turns up can point to the angle that most needs your attention.

Your turn: describe a card in your own words

Pick a card, face down. Write what you see, then what it might mean. Quinn checks every line against the card.

Choose a card

Your exercise: a first reading

Practise reading for someone. A client brings a question, you draw a card for them and answer as their reader. Then Quinn looks at your reading.

Key takeaways

  1. 1The emblem names the suit; the scene shows what’s happening.
  2. 2Each suit asks a different question of the same situation.
  3. 3The suit that turns up points to the angle that needs attention.
  4. 4Read hard Swords cards with care, and never treat Pentacles as a money forecast.
