Is This My Path?

Is This My Path? is a three-card spread for a long-term question: is this career, this kind of work, the right road for you? It isn’t for this week’s problems at work; it’s for the bigger picture.

Start by naming a significator: the King for your kind of work. You don’t draw it; you choose it, because it stands for the path you’re asking about. King of Wands: business, media, communication, travel, coaching. King of Cups: counselling, teaching, health, care, the arts. King of Pentacles: finance, building, property, farming, food, sport. King of Swords: law, medicine, science, research, politics.

Then three cards. Card 1 is your recent experience on this path: how it has really felt lately. Card 2 is the most you can gain if you stay on it. Card 3 is the most likely outcome, or advice to yourself. Read card 3 both ways and see which one speaks to you.

Read cards 1 and 2 against each other. A hard Recent card next to a rich Gain card often means the path is right but the way you’re walking it isn’t: too much load, the wrong role, not enough support. A comfortable Recent card next to a thin Gain card might mean you’ve stopped growing.

Keep the spread for its job. “Is nursing still my path?” suits it. “Should I leave this hospital?” or “How do I deal with my manager?” are about the current job, and other spreads fit them better (Should I Stay or Should I Go? is one you’ll meet in Read the Whole Story).

Practise sorting questions: decide whether each one is about a career path or about the current job.

Key takeaways

  1. 1Choose the King for your kind of work; don’t draw it.
  2. 2Recent experience, the most you can gain, then outcome or advice.
  3. 3Read Recent against Gain: they often tell the real story.
  4. 4Use it for the long road, not this week’s problems.
