Instinct and True Self

Two small spreads Quinn uses when you feel unsure: What Is My Instinct Telling Me? and What Is My True Self Telling Me? Both use three cards, and both read the first two together.

Both spreads have the same shape. Cards one and two describe your situation now; card three answers. In What Is My Instinct Telling Me?, the third card is your instinct revealed: what your gut already senses. In What Is My True Self Telling Me?, it’s guidance from your higher self: what matters to you over the long run.

Read the first two cards as one picture, not two separate meanings. Ask what they share, where they pull against each other, and what they say together about where you are. Two Swords cards together might be a mind that won’t stop; a Cup and a Pentacle might be feelings tangled up with money. It’s a small taste of how cards talk to each other, which Cards in Conversation covers in depth.

Then read the third card as the answer. For instinct, keep it close and quick: what does your body or gut already know? Instinct answers are often simple and immediate: stop, rest, go, ask. For the true self, take the longer view: what would you choose if you were being most yourself? Those answers are often about values, honesty and direction.

Choose the spread by the question. Instinct suits quick, personal decisions where you sense something but can’t name it: “Something feels off about this flat”, “Should I say yes to the trip?”. True self suits bigger questions about who you are and what you want: “Am I in the right career?”, “What do I really want from this relationship?”.

Both spreads are gentle. They don’t predict, and they don’t tell you what other people think. They hold up what you already sense so you can look at it clearly. They work best when you answer honestly: does this card match something you’ve been feeling?

Your exercise
